Randoms Post… who is Ozzy Henning?, Celteks newest addition, get your SnowBasin 2011/2012 passes now, and a peek at DLX for winter

Have you ever heard of Ozzy Henning? The answer is no, well unless youre one of the few hundred folks here in the SLC/PC area that see/know Ozzy and have your mind blown by him on a daily basis. How is it someone with such a love of snowboarding and so much talent can go unnoticed and without a single sponsor? Well I guess the answer to that lies in the fact that we all know “the industry” is a schmoozing, ass kissing, who you know meat grinder where how well you ride doesnt always speak loud enough. So some of Ozzys friends have created a Facebook group entitled “why isnt Ozzy sponsored yet?’ .. check out the group and see whats up. In the mean time peep A day in the Life with Ozzy on Theo Muse’s Vimeo page…

Celtek has a new rider on its pro team and its not an SLC local. Thats right the Clan is branching out and just announced its signed Euro ripper Marc Swoboda to its pro team. Marc has been killing it over in the old country winning two Euro Volcom PB&J’s, as well as placing 2nd in the Nanshan Slopestyle contest in China and bagging multiple cover shots. You can ride with Marc and the rest of the Celtek Clan this summer at HCSC but until then you can check out his full part from Loveolution 2 and see why the Celtek Clan was so hyped to sign him….

Snowbasin resort is already gearing up for getting down in 2011/2012. They have announced that pre-sale of season passes will begin online June1st or in person weekends starting Fathers Day June 19th during normal hours (9-5:30) . The Basin is bringing back its popular Pass Perks program which in addition to discounts on repairs, discounts at the tubing hill, and 50% buddy vouchers also gives you free summertime gondola usage which should entice you to buy now! More info can be found here…  If youve never made it to Snowbasin resort you really should give it a try. In my opinion its the most complete mountain in Utah giving you the huge steeps of Snowbird with the amazing park and pipes of Park City all in one mountain.. you cant beat that.

Heres some random stuff….

Do you know who Matt Belzile is? Probably not… Do you know who Eddie Grams is? Possibly not… Belzile is a k2 Am and Eddie Grams is an amazing film maker who was headquartered in SLC for the last few seasons. His production company entitled Variety Pack put out a couple heavy hitting movies. Seriously Not Bad is one of my favorite movies of all time. Eddie just has a great sense of editing, and music selection that I really connect to. Anyway Im bummed that Variety Pack is gone but the good news is that it is because Eddie is working with VideoGrass this season. This has me superhyped  for this falls VG releases … anyways heres Matt Belziles part from Variety Packs “All plugged up”… now you know who Matt and Eddie are just in case the names come up at your next formal social function

Last day at Park City … party at the Cobra Dogs booth!

We headed up to PC this past Sunday to grab one last Cobra Dog (I actually got the very last veggie dog they had) and have a bit of fun with the PC crew.  Cobra Dogs set up a “hot dog” jib and the party was on. Its well known that PC has the very best spring slush along the Wasatch front and this season was no exception as the event turned into a zeach fest for sure … fun times!

Powder Mountain

Last night I received a call from a guy looking to buy one of my extra boards I had sitting around. The only problem was that he lived up north a bit about 40 miles away. So I said what the hell I’ll bring the board to you and make a day of it by hitting up Powder Mountain. Powder Mountain if you dont know is very aptly named. Known locally as a sure fire place to get pow stashes days and even weeks after a storm Powder Mountain should be a must on everyones list of places to visit. In addition to 7000 acres of trees, open glades, rocks/cliffs, a terrain park, a half pipe and a few natural half pipes they also have Cat accessed terrain. Powder is a no frills resort with old school EVERYTHING ( Rope Tows people) but I like that. Much like my home mountain of Brighton its all about the ride not base village shopping plazas.  Come to Powder Mountain and you come to ride period. The snow gods were with me today as todays storm was sitting heavy on the Ogden resorts vs. the normal SLC  Cottonwood Canyons pattern. As a result my tracks were being covered every run but I was unable to really explore as much as I would have liked. I lapped the Hidden Lake Express most of the day and had a blast. Unfortunately since my trip was so quickly planned I wasnt able to get up a crew with me so I dont have a ton of pictures or video but heres a few things…..

looky what I found in the parking lot .... guess Powder is down with angrysnowboarder.com

The lady in the ticket office said today was very busy because of the snow. Powder is known for extremely sparse crowds .. for example "very busy" meant about 75 cars in the lot. That 75 cars for 7000 acres .. now you kinda get why freshies are always easy to find!

If you know me you know I LOVE MUSHROOMS .. I spotted this from the lift and it was untouched .. really untouched and visible from the lift WTF!! Its a 6 foot drop off with a 2-3 foot ollie on... my day pretty much centered around this thing...

I was able to get 4 hits off of it... one on each side, a roll over on the middle, and finally a good launch off at the end of the day.. this was awesome

There is a shuttle that goes up and down the canyon road that leads to Powder Mountain. It stops and picks up people off the side of the road that have ventured into the off piste area known as Powder Country and also people who took advantage of cat riding.. oh yeah its free. The shuttle knows whats up "Real Snow Real Fun!"

At the end of the day ( or at the beginning if youd prefer) swing by the Eden Coffee and Cocoa stand in the grocery store parking lot for some liquid yummy. Right there at the four way stop sign.... keep it local kids!

I’ll admit its been years since I’ve been up to Powder Mountain, in fact over a decade but I will never let another season pass without multiple trips to this awesome spot. In fact Im going to try and get some of the homies up there before they close this season. Hopefully then  we can get some great pictures and a bit of video. Check out their site for yourself and be amazed at all the open terrain as well as great off piste terrain and  the available Cat Riding

Support riders of all sorts….

Next time I have plumbing issues at the house you know who Im going to call? Im going to call Maxfield Plumbing and Sprinkler supply in Holiday Utah and you know why? Because today at Brighton there was 13 inches of new snow and their van was in the parking lot. Thats right they took the time to come up and get a few laps in the new snow. Im supporting my local riders even the ones that arent trying to go pro.  You can do the same. Think of it as an extension of the shop local movement thats centered more on people that skateboard, snowboard, bmx or whatever. Salt Lake being a snow town has ample opportunity to do this it just takes a little digging around to find out where to spend your dollar (Fresh, Fice, and SFK jump immediately to mind). Sometimes finding things totally unrelated to the snow/skate lifestyle  like a plumber, tree service, tile installer etc takes a bit more work but  in my opinion its definitely worth it in the long run. Sure the shop local movement can be a little more expensive but I for one dont mind spending a few more dollars if I know the person Im giving them to uses some of those dollars to get their shred on.

In fact you can take this to a bigger level as well. There are tons of smaller companies within the snow and skate world that dont actually sell skateboards and snowboards. These companies have been known as lifestyle companies in the past. Companies like Stance, Brixton, and Poler all have skate or snow influences even if they dont sell skateboards or snowboards. Again as I said earlier its  bit more expensive but I’d rather pay 15 bucks for a three pack of white socks from Stance than give Wal-Mart 6 bucks for 6 socks and some blow hard ass hat in Texas reap the benefits.  There are tons of companies who want to get into “our” market. You see them at all the big T.V. competitions but never at the local hill comps. So ask yourself are they really concerned with “us” or are they just trying to latch on to the mystique of our lifestyle to the millions of future riders sitting at home watching these competitions. Ask yourself who would you rather support?

Any way thats just my two cents and how I choose to spend them. You choose to spend yours how you wish …..
